Preteen/Teen Officer/Leadership Training

When: March 27, 10am-1pm

What:

• Participate in teambuilding/parli pro games and get the supplies needed to lead these games at your club meetings

• Choose officer or leadership trainings such as Running a meeting (President), Create a club calendar (Vice President), Managing the Money (Treasurer), Taking Minutes (Secretary)

• Social Time: hot tub (the hot tub is working this year!!), board games, Wii

PSU Spring Dairy/Livestock/Horse Judging Contest

The Penn State Block and Bridle Club, Dairy and Animal Science Club, and Collegiate Judging teams invite you to the Annual Spring judging contest. The event will be held in the Penn State Snider Ag Arena on Saturday, March 20, 9am to 4pm. Cost is $5.00 per lunch (chaperone’s lunch is free). Please contact Tia for more information.

• Dairy Contest: Teams of 3 or 4 4-Hers will judge 8 classes of Holstein cows and heifers. Senior contestants will give 2 sets of reasons.

• Horse Contest: Teams of 4 or individuals 4-Hers will judge 4 classes: 3 halter, 4 performance. Advanced contestants (members who have given reasons in a previous contest) will give 2 sets of reasons. Beginners will give 1 set.

• Livestock Contest: Teams of 4 4-Hers will judge 2 cattle classes, 2 swine classes, 2 sheep classes. Advanced contestants (members who have given reasons in a previous contest) will give 3 sets of reasons.

Family Dodgeball Contest

All 4-Hers, their families, and youth interested in 4-H are welcome to attend. Compete in dodgeball and learn about upcoming 4-H events. Clubs are encouraged to form teams of 7 and call Tia before March 12 with their team name. Teams can be made up of 4-Hers, youth or adults (anyone over the age of 8). Substitutes can be used between rounds.

Winning Ways State Horse Clinic

Cindy Young is a successful trainer, exhibitor and instructor. She rode the 2009 World Champion and 2008 Reserve World Champion in Junior Hunter Under Saddle. She has multiple top 5 Congress placings and coaches youth in all-around events including showmanship, horsemanship, equitation and hunter under saddle. Cindy and her family operate Young Quarter Horses in Yadkinville, North Carolina. Laurie Hoopes coaches youth and amateurs at Laurie Hoopes Show Horses in Vermillion, Ohio. She is the coach and trainer of multiple Congress and World Show top ten finishers in trail events.

Tractor Safety Project

The Bradford County 4-H & FFA Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation classes will start on March 16, 2010 from 6-8 P.M at the Penn State Cooperative Extension Office at 701 South Fourth St. in Towanda. The purpose of the classes is to help 14-16 year old youth learn how to be safe while operating tractors and equipment on a farm as well as recognize potential danger areas on a farm.

The class schedule will be as follows:

Tuesday, March 16 6-9 P.M.

Tuesday, March 30 6-9 P.M.

Tuesday, April 6 6-Dark.

Tuesday, April 13 6-9 P.M

Tuesday April 20 6-9 P.M

Wednesday April 28 Test

As part of the program youth will need to pass a written test, driving skills exam as well as a driving test. This program is taught by trained instructors from Penn State Cooperative Extension, the farming community and agricultural equipment industry.

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act it is illegal for youth under the age of 16 to do many agricultural tasks which are deemed hazardous by the U.S. Department of Labor while working on a farm that is not owned by their parent or a guardian. With a 24- hour training program, 14 and 15 year olds are exempt from this law and are allowed to operate tractors over 20 Horsepower as well as operate specific types of farm machinery.

Registration is limited to the first 20 applicants. Registrations are due to the Extension Office by March 9, 2010, 265-2896. The cost for the classes is $20.00. If you have already paid your $10.00 4-H materials fee to your 4-H club, it is only $10.00.

The program is organized and conducted by Penn State Cooperative Extension, Bradford County 4-H and Bradford County FFA. Participants will need to fill out an online 4-H member enrollment form at the beginning of the first class to be covered by Penn State insurance during the program. Computers will be set up the first night to be able to do this. Each youth will need to bring a parent or adult with them.

State Capital Days

The state has not yet posted any information about the 2010 conference; however, here is information for the 2009 conference. It is a great experience if you are at all interested in governemnt or just visiting the PA capital building!!

This program shows 4-Hers how state government works and helps them understand their responsibilities as citizens.

Who: 4-Hers who are 15 years or older as of Jan. 1

When: April 25-27

Where: Hilton Harrisburg & Towers, Harrisburg, PA

What: Participants will visit the state capital, study the process of legislation through workshops and speakers, meet and talk with various state government officials, take part in a mock legislative session where participants amend current bills as the majority and minority, and visit agencies (department of Ag , PA game commission, department of health) at an agency fair.

State Horse Judges and Show Management Conference - February 19-21

Who Should Attend: New applicants or current judges on the PA 4-H Horse Show Judges List & open show judges, Horse show management and officials, and Competitive horse judging team coaches and members

Tentatively scheduled sessions: New PA 4-H Horse Show rules and rulebook test, Scoring Trail and Over Fences classes, Judging Saddle Seat classes, Responsibilities and tips for judges and show officials, Contest classes rules, equipment and set-up, Patterns and course design, Show management guidelines and safety planning for county and district shows, Information for judging team coaches and members, Judging references and resources

Horse Bowl/Skillaton Contest - February 15

When: Monday February 15, beginning at 4pm

Where: Extension Office, Towanda

Who: Any 4-H member (Ages 8-18)

Teams: Each club can send as many teams of (4) 4-Hers as possible or as many individuals as possible (individuals will be put into teams at the contest).

Lunch: Pizza and drink will be provided. Each team should bring a snack to share (Veggies, fruit, chips, cookies, etc)

Awards: Handed out at the end of the contest

Horse Bowl and Hippology contests will be run simultaneously; however, teams can compete in both contests. *All questions for the horse bowl contest will be taken from the packet that can be obtained from the extension office. *Hippology test questions and skillathons are taken from 4-H book activities, reference guides and popular horse publications.

Volunteers: Parents and leaders are needed to ask questions, keep score, keep time, grill, etc.

State Dairy Judging Clinic for Coaches and Sr. 4-Hers - January 30

Where: Penn State University
What: Training on the new PDCA scorecard, comparative traits and terms, taking notes, and giving reasons. Coaches and 4-H member, 13 years and older, will also travel to a local dairy farm to judge and discuss a couple classes.
Travel: Gary will be attending the training and will be able to transport 4-H members. Please call Gary at 265-2896 to register and attend.
